BAPTISTRY

When it was originally added on, the Baptistry was easily considered properly located at the western entrance area of the Church, in or near the former Narthex. Thus the Baptism, in this place, symbolized entry into the fellowship of Christ's Church. The marble Baptismal font is inscribed as "the Gift of the Sunday School - Easter 1872." Within the basin of the font is a silver piscina which was given by Jane B. Martin on October 4, 1939. Through the perforation in the font and piscina the consecrated water of Baptism is returned to the soil below the church.

Baptistry Detail

A large brass and wood cover protects the font when not in use -- an orange design, standing high with a cast brass angel at the tip. This is the gift of Mrs. Lewis Hood in 1888 when the Baptistry Tower was constructed, in memory of a little child, Edwin Percy Hood (born November 29, 1881; died on November 20, 1883).

The gothic carved wall tryptich placed in the Baptistry below the Peace Window is a memorial to Eveline Coppin McDonald, given by Mrs. George Herring. The two candlesticks and cross which rest on the shelf of this panel were placed there in memory of Mary P. Driggs commemorating her teaching of children.
