The Second Glenn Window

When Edwin Mason Glenn, "Ted" to his many associates and friends in the Diocese of Lexington, passed from us, his wife, Elizabeth, who within five years followed him, presented this double-lancet window. The dedicatory panels carry the following: Edwin Mason Glenn (1895-1979) and Elizabeth Louise Glenn (1894-1984). From Mr. James Taylor and Mr. Walter Bambach of the Riordan Studio we have the explanatory data published on January 11, 1981, in the Chimes -- "It has been a major design in all of these fourteen lancets to have each contain an Old Testament symbol to remind us of the continuity of the Old and New Testament in our Christian tradition." The upper symbol in the left panel is a simplified monogram of the Greek Chi Rho designation for Christ. The scene of a young Jesus among the elders in the Temple, listening and teaching, is presented in the medallion (the second chapter of Luke). Below this is the cross of triumph and victory typifying the global reach of the Christian faith throughout all the Earth. The lower symbol is that of the Apostle Simon called the Zealot; the boat hook designates him as a great "fisher of men." On the right window the upper Old Testament symbol is two stone slabs on which are inscribed Hebrew numerals designating the Decalogue or Ten Commandments. The Parable of the Sower as written in the thirteenth chapter of Matthew is the subject of this medallion scene. Below the medallion is the symbol of Saint Matthew, the Apostle, shown as a winged man with a book and the bottom-most shield on which is a halbred or "handle ax," the intrument of his martyrdom.
