The Thompson Window

This, the first of the seven double lancets to be installed, relates the last episodes in the Life of Jesus Christ. Designed in the Riordan Studios by Rudolph Frey during 1927, it was completed and dedicated on Easter Day 1928. The gift of their children, it was placed as a memorial to Jennie Burdsall Thompson (1851-1927) and Maurice DeKay Thompson (1848-1906), who customarily occupied a nearby pew for the service of worship. The window colors are rch and darker in tone, a feature emphasized by placement in the north wall of the Nave where no sunlight penetrates. The medallion themes are the Crucifixion and the Ascension, here presented as bright jewels in the darker background. Above the scene of the Crucifixion is the group of tools used in making the cross on which Jesus, the Christ, was crucified

Below is a Crown of Thorns with letters INRI which connote Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews, usually shown fixed to the cross above the crucified Christ. The lower symbol is a frond of the hysop plant on which the sponge carrying wine vinegar was offered to Jesus on the Cross. On the right lancet the symbol above the medallion shows a twig of acacia which signifies Immortality of the Soul. The lighted candle below typifies the great Light of the World. An Easter symbol proclaiming the opening of the tomb, the bursting pomegranate is an often seen symbol of the Resurrection.
